Medication Synchronization Now Available for Patients in Select Health Plans

Posted: 04/03/2017

As of March 15, 2017, members of Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBSM) and Blue Care Network (BCN) can now get their medications synchronized at the pharmacy.

Missed medication is the leading cause of hospitalizations, emergency department visits and adverse drug reactions.  Over time, patients on multiple medications will have varying supplies of medication, each with different refill dates.  This translates to multiple trips to the pharmacy each month for the patient, and multiple, disjointed refill requests to your practice.

Medication synchronization programs streamline prescription refills, hence reducing the amount of refill requests sent by the pharmacy.  It also allows the provider to review the medication request in context with the patient’s other medications.  Medication synchronization pilots have provided evidence that this service reduces medication non-adherence.

To start this service, partial refills may be required initially until medication fill dates are aligned. Both BCBSM and BCN will prorate the copayment based on days’ supply, so patients will not pay more for this service.
