Following a Gluten-Free Diet: Beneficial to the General Population?

A gluten-free diet is necessary for those who have celiac disease and may help those patients with a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance. However, many people in the general public continue to opt for a gluten-free diet. They view gluten-free products as healthier than their gluten-containing equals. While a gluten-free diet can be well-balanced, this does not imply a gluten-free diet is healthier than one containing gluten. Often, gluten-free products are higher in fat and total energy and the whole-grain content is lower. This can lead to increased energy intake and might cause unintended consequences in those trying to lose weight. Additionally, whole-grains help maintain healthy gut bacteria, thus the elimination of gluten by the general public may affect gut health. Current evidence does not suggest any benefits to the general public following a gluten-free diet.
