Biotin May Interfere with Certain Lab Tests

Posted: 05/01/2018

Many lab assays use biotin technology due to its protein binding potential.  Some of the more common ones include hormone tests and those that test for markers of cardiac health like troponin. For a list of lab tests that biotin may interfere with, click here.

The amounts of biotin in most multivitamins, prenatal vitamins, and foods are unlikely to cause a problem. However, many dietary supplements that promote hair, skin, and nail benefits contain biotin levels up to 650 times the recommended daily intake of biotin.

FDA recommends the following prior to patients having lab work done.

  • Inform physicians if taking supplements that contain biotin
    • Biotin may be listed as vitamin B7, vitamin H, or coenzyme R
  • For patients who are taking high dosages of biotin, encourage them to hold their dose for 3 days prior to lab work to allow for appropriate washout
