Flavored Vaping Products Banned by the State of Michigan

Posted: 09/19/2019

Emergency rules banning flavored nicotine vaping products were released September 18, 2019 by Governor Whitmer’s office and were effective immediately. The ban was developed in response to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) finding of a public health emergency created by skyrocketing levels of youth vaping. Retailers and resellers will have 14 days to comply, as outlined in the rules. To see the rules and other details, go to Michigan.gov.

Blue Cross Complete encourages all providers to talk to their patients about the ban and tobacco cessation. As a reminder, Blue Cross Complete offers a free, phone-based tobacco quit program that helps members make a plan to quit using tobacco and offers support and encouragement to help them stick to it. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition, Blue Cross Complete drug benefits include over-the-counter and prescription medicines.  See “Pharmacy Services” in Section 12 of the Provider Manual for additional coverage information or go to the Preferred Drug List at mibluecrosscomplete.com under the Provider Programs section on the Providers tab and click on Tobacco cessation.
