Healthy Eating Tips during COVID-19

Posted: 05/05/2020

Reaching for comfort foods is tempting during the current COVID-19 pandemic. These foods can be part of a healthy diet, in moderation, but it is also important to consider the following tips to continue a healthy dietary intake.

  • Maintain fruit and vegetable intake during these uncertain times. Time between grocery shopping trips has increased for most families and fresh produce does not always last. Consider purchasing frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen fruits and vegetables preserve most of their nutrients and flavor, making them a good alternative to fresh produce.
  • Keep healthy snacks in the house. Avoid reaching for salty or sweet snacks, such as chips or ice cream, every time hunger strikes between a meal. Instead, consider nuts, dried fruit, unsweetened yogurt, whole grain toast, nut butters, hummus and vegetables as more filling, healthful options.
  • Eat meals as a family whenever possible. Many families have lost their normal routines due to COVID-19. Consuming the dinner meal as a family can add some routine back into day-to-day life. Family meals also increase family bonds and fun, while the structure decreases anxiety for children.
