Posted: 05/09/2021

The Systemic Allergic Reactions to SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination study is recruiting volunteers to receive one of the two mRNA vaccines - Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 Vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine. These are the same vaccines that have received emergency use authorization by the FDA and are being used at public vaccination sites.

Volunteers may qualify if they are 18-69 years of age and:

  • You have a history of Severe Allergies, OR
  • You have been diagnosed with a Mast Cell Disorder, OR
  • You have a history of No Allergies.

Michigan Medicine is doing this trial because some people (about 2 to 10 out of every million people vaccinated) have had severe allergic reactions to these vaccines. This reaction is called anaphylaxis.

Qualified volunteers participate in the study, will:

  • Visit a participating clinic.
  • Receive 2 doses of a COVID-19 Vaccine.
    • Some participants will also receive a placebo at the first visit but then receive the actual vaccine at the second visit.
  •  Provide a nasal swab, blood and urine samples.
  • Be observed for 90 minutes.
  • Record your symptoms for 1 week.

The compensation for this study is $50 per clinical visit, they may complete 2-3 visits.
