Mandatory E-Prescribing in Michigan Begins January 1, 2023

Posted: 11/08/2022

Beginning January 1, 2023, Michigan prescribers will be required to electronically transmit all prescriptions for controlled and non-controlled substance medications to pharmacies.

See The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Electronic Prescribing FAQ for more information on Michigan’s requirements.

Michigan’s statute allows for a waiver to be issued if a prescriber cannot meet the electronic prescribing requirements.  Rules promulgated by LARA address the process for obtaining a waiver and related eligibility criteria. Click here  to download the form and instructions for applying for the waiver.

For more specific information about the Michigan EPCS ruling, see Section 17754a of the Public Health Code, as well as Senate Bill 248 and Senate Bill 254 from the Michigan Legislature, which detail the electronic prescribing requirements and exemptions.
