Medicare Telehealth Policy Update: Key Extensions Through March 31, 2025

Posted: 01/03/2025

The American Relief Act, signed into law on December 21, 2024, has extended several critical pandemic-era telehealth flexibilities through March 31, 2025. Originally set to expire on December 31, 2024, these extensions ensure that many of the telehealth benefits introduced during the pandemic will continue to be available, supporting both patients and providers in maintaining access to care.

Key Highlights of the Extension:

1. Expanded Telehealth Access

  • No Geographic Restrictions: Telehealth services can now be delivered anywhere in the United States, including patients’ homes, without geographic limitations.
  • FQHCs and Rural Health Clinics: Federally Qualified Health Centers and rural health clinics remain authorized to offer telehealth services.

2. Broadened Practitioner Eligibility

  • Healthcare professionals such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical psychologists, therapists, and dietitians can continue providing telehealth services alongside physicians.

3. Mental Health Services via Telehealth

  • The requirement for an in-person exam prior to telehealth mental health services is delayed, allowing providers to offer diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment with greater flexibility.

4. Audio-Only Telehealth Services

  • Telehealth services delivered via audio-only communication remain covered and reimbursable.

5. Telehealth for Hospice Care

  • Providers can continue to use telehealth for the face-to-face encounters required before hospice care recertification.

Looking Ahead

While these extensions provide significant benefits, they are only authorized through March 31, 2025. We will closely monitor telehealth policy developments in 2025 and share updates as new information becomes available.

This extension reflects a continued commitment to leveraging telehealth to enhance access to care for patients across the country. Stay tuned for further updates from OSP as we navigate the evolving telehealth landscape.
