What You Need to Know About Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine in Michigan

Michigan residents are accustomed to COVID-19 shots being widely accessible, but new federal guidelines may put that broad availability on uncertain footing. What remains unresolved is how the FDA’s determination will affect insurance coverage for the updated vaccine. That decision now rests with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which is scheduled to meet September 18.

Earlier this month, Bridge Michigan published an article addressing some of the most common questions raised by both patients and providers, including:

  • Can I receive the shot if I don’t meet the new restrictions?
  • Where can I get a vaccine?
  • Will I need a prescription?
  • Will insurance cover the shot?

On the issue of coverage, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM), the state’s largest health insurer, emphasized that vaccines have a proven record of safety and effectiveness and confirmed it will continue covering the COVID-19 vaccine as a benefit.
