PREVENT Calculator: An Updated Approach to Predicting Heart, Kidney, and Metabolic Health

Posted: 12/04/2025

AHA Launches New PREVENT Calculator to Improve Long-Term Heart and Kidney Risk Assessment

The American Heart Association (AHA) has introduced the PREVENT Calculator, a new tool designed to estimate a person’s 10-year and 30-year risk for major cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic events. It replaces earlier models by integrating a wider range of health factors — including blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and optional measures like kidney function and A1c.

A More Comprehensive Approach

Developed using data from millions of U.S. adults, the PREVENT equations aim to reflect today’s diverse population. By incorporating kidney and metabolic indicators, the tool offers a broader picture of risk than previous calculators focused solely on heart disease.

Lower but More Personalized Risk Estimates

Compared with older tools such as the 2013 pooled cohort equations, PREVENT often generates lower risk scores. Clinicians are encouraged to use these estimates as part of shared decision-making to guide lifestyle changes, preventive treatments, and long-term care planning.

Benefits and Limitations

The 30-year risk option helps younger adults understand how early habits affect future health, while the 10-year estimate remains useful for more immediate decision-making. However, results depend on the availability of complete lab data, and experts caution that the lower estimates require thoughtful interpretation to avoid underestimating risk.

Moving Prevention Forward

The AHA views PREVENT as a step toward a more holistic, long-term approach to cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health. As the tool becomes more widely adopted, it is expected to improve preventive care conversations and help reduce the overall burden of heart and kidney disease.
