Mushroom Coffee: Is it Worth All the Hype?

Mushroom coffee is gaining in popularity, but what is it really? Mushroom coffee is a mixture of ground coffee and ground dried mushrooms. Some of the touted health benefits of mushroom coffee include reduction of inflammation, reduction of stress, improved sleep, and a strengthened immune system. Research supports the adaptogenic (stress reducing) properties of whole mushrooms, however, there is minimal research supporting the claimed benefits of processed mushroom coffee. In addition, mushroom coffee costs significantly more than regular coffee and can contain high levels of oxalates, which can contribute to kidney stones. Bottom line: Mushroom coffee is likely safe to try if you do not struggle with kidney issues, however, benefits such as reducing inflammation, supporting the immune system, increased fiber, etc. from eating whole mushrooms are backed by research. Adding whole mushrooms to your dietary intake will provide some of these same health benefits.
