Medicaid Health Plans Will Not Provide Coverage for Inpatient Stays for Behavioral Health Diagnoses in Non-psychiatric Hospitals

Posted: 03/26/2024

Effective immediately, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has removed the new contract requirements for Medicaid Health Plans to provide coverage for inpatient stays with Behavioral Health diagnoses in non-psychiatric hospitals. This change is retroactive to October 1, 2023.

This notice serves as a correction to Blue Cross Complete’s provider notification sent on March 11, 2024, with the subject title Medicaid Health Plans provide coverage for inpatient stays in non-psychiatric hospitals.

Inpatients stays with BH diagnoses in non-psychiatric hospitals are not covered by MHPs. See the attached Blue Cross Complete Neuropsychological Testing Guideline notice, which summarizes coverage.
