Naloxone Authorized for Over-the-Counter Pharmacy Distribution in Michigan

Governor Rick Snyder authorized the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to issue a standing order that authorizes pharmacists to distribute naloxone. Pharmacies must register with the state to participate and registration just opened on Thursday, May 25th. This means it will take time for pharmacies to be granted authorization as well as order the product to have available. It will be the responsibility of the pharmacist to educate patients on how to administer the medication. Naloxone is available in two forms, injectable and nasal spray and the average cost is around $45.
