Do Non-Insulin-Treated Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Benefit from Glucose Self-Monitoring?

The value of glucose self-monitoring was recently studied to determine if there is a benefit for non-insulin-treated patients with Type 2 Diabetes. After one year, it was concluded that glucose self-monitoring did not improve glycemic control or health-related quality of life. There was no significant statistical or clinical difference in A1c or health-related quality of life between those participants who performed glucose self-monitoring and those who did not. The findings of this article suggest that glucose monitoring in non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes should not be routine.
