Blue Cross Complete Announcement: MDHHS Reminds Vaccinating Providers About Immunization Coverage Through the Medicaid

Posted: 11/10/2023

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is reminding vaccinating health care providers that immunizations are covered by Medicaid as a preventive service for children and adults when given according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations.

The MDHHS released Letter 23-70 on November 7, 2023, encouraging vaccinating providers to immunize all Medicaid beneficiaries according to the recommended immunization schedules. As a reminder:

  • For children 18 years and younger, the Vaccine for Children Program provides immunizations coverage at no cost to the provider.
  • Medicaid covers immunizations for members 19 years of age or older.
  • Michigan Health Departments, and pharmacies that participate in the VFC program can be contacted for specifics about the VFC program, what immunizations are available, and instructions on enrolling and obtaining immunizations.
