Blue Cross Complete Asks That You Report Z Codes to Help Improve Patients’ Health Outcomes

Posted: 04/19/2024

Blue Cross Complete (BCC), believes providers play a critical role in addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) by accurately reporting Z codes to help them better address issues and concerns affecting their members.

SDoH encompass a range of non-medical factors that influence a person’s health. These include socioeconomic status, education level, neighborhood conditions, access to healthy food and employment status. SDoH can have a profound effect on a person’s risk of developing chronic disease, their access to health care and overall well-being.

These social factors can impose significant barriers to a person’s health and wellness and may affect their ability or willingness to follow a recommended treatment plan.

By working together to adopt a “whole person” approach, BCC can help remove barriers to improve health and enhance the quality of life for members. Therefore, reporting Z codes related to SDoH can provide crucial information to Blue Cross Complete.

Providers should include applicable SDoH Z codes when submitting claims for services. This can help BCC track and identify the unique, social needs impacting members and connect them to resources.
